Independent Spotlight: Big Zulu 

            Big Zulu is an up and coming South African rapper, songwriter, and actor. His birth name is Siyabonoga Nene and was born on April 7th, 1987 in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal. He often listened to Maskandi and Isichathamiya growing up.

            He spent years as a taxi driver before quitting in 2008 and to continue to pursue his music careerIn 2009, he would win “King of Rap” in a rap battle contest held by Back to the City. He signed a record deal with Universal Music Records in 2015 and released his debut single “Donsa Nkabi” in 2016. His debut album “Ushun Wenkabi” was released in July of 2018. His second album “Ungqongqoshe Woongqongqoshe” was released in 2019 and his album single “Ama Million” would peak at #5 on the iTunes Charts and be certified platinum. His third single off the album “Vuma dlozi” also went platinum. The album is certified gold and received a nomination for Best Hip Hop Album, Best Male Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year at the South African Music Awards.

            Zulu would heavily start to grow in 2020 and 2021. His singles in the past two years have been at the top of the charts. He would have multiple singles peak at #1, #3, and #4 respectively. In 2021, at the South African Music Awards he would win Best Collaboration for the song “Mali Eningi” featuring Riky Rick & Intaba Yase Dubai
