Emtee is a hip-hop musician and record producer from South Africa. Born as Mthembeni Ndevu in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, South Africa on September 15, 1992. Emtee first performed at the age of nine at school talent show. At 17 Emtee worked as a music instructor at a school and used the money he earned to record his first mixtape.
In 2009, he met the South African rapper Maraza, they became friends and Maraza was also his mentor. Maraza introduced Emtee to the music industry. They collaborated in the hit single titled “In It To Win It”, in 2010, but it wasn’t until 2015 that Emtee gained popularity.
Emtee’s single “Roll up” became an instant hit and a club banger. Emtee has said in previous interviews that this song was recorded in a day, the day before his project “Avery”, named after his son, would be released. The success of his hit got the attention of rappers Wizkid and another South African rapper named AKA, and worked together in the remix of “Roll Up”. Not only did this club banger catch the attention of other rappers but also from awards shows.
He won his first awards at the South African Hip Hop Awards on December 2015 for Song of The Year. He also received 5 nominations at the Metro FM Music Awards, in which he won 4 of the nominations, Best Music Video, Best Remix, Best Hip Hop Album, and Listener Choice.
