Q & A with Gin – Independent Spotlight

mixtapefinalhighresscobWritten By: Carlos Reyes

Gin, the owner of GSBookings and hip-hop enthusiast since a very young age, allowed this little session of questions and answers for others to read and enjoy. Gin has been a part of the music industry since 2003, and has done wonderful things since, most notably creating GSBookings and be featured in the Circle of Bosses Canada. She has worked with numerous artists such as the legendary group Onyx and hip hop icon Chino XL, and also came out with an LP. Below are the questions she graciously answered. Enjoy!

At what age did you start loving hip-hop?

“I fell in love with Hip-Hop at the age of 6 years old. It was 1988 and I was living in Lynwood, California at that time. I just remember playing in the front yard with my radio, and changing the stations until I found a hip-hop song. It was actually a Miami Bass song by Afro-Rican called “Give It all You Got.” I knew from that moment that I was in love with hip-hop and it was going to have an impact on my life.”

How long have you been a part of the hip-hop music industry?

“I started as a street promoter in 2003 where I would organize, promote and book my own events. I did events with very notable DJs such as Kutmasta Kurt, DJ Melo-D from the BeatJunkies and DJ Revolution from the World Famous Wake Up Show.”

Recently, your single was featured on the GSBookings mix-tape. Where did the inspiration for your song come from?

“A lot of people don’t know that I make music myself. Its something that I actually keep on the underground. I bet people who listen to the mixtape wouldn’t know that Gin is actually me. The only people who know that I make music is my family and the artists that I work with. I wanted to make sure that I added the track “On My Grind” featuring Zoolay on the mixtape.”

“I released this song in 2012 on the My Lyrical Expression EP. The inspiration really came from working on my dissertation for my PhD. I was working so hard on getting my doctorate that I really felt that I was on my grind. Its a saying that I always say. When people ask me how I am doing. I be like, I’m “On My Grind”

“Basically in the song, its talking about being in the struggle and working hard to make things better and not losing your faith. I feel a lot of people can relate to this song. We have to stay on our grind to reach our goals and dreams.”

What artists have you worked with thus far?

“In terms of booking artists for shows, I have worked with Kxng Crooked also known as Crooked I, Chino XL, ONYX, Ras Kass, Planet Asia, Turbin, Sapient, Killah Priest, Cannibus and Electric Division.”

What has been your greatest pleasure from working in this industry?

“I think the greatest pleasure that I get from working in the industry is being able to be a part of putting the show together. Back in the days I was responsible for everything, now I am only responsible for supplying the talent to promoters and venue talent buyers.

Whenever there is a local show in the area, I make sure to show up and oversee the flow of the show. When I see people get all hyped about going to a hip-hop show and seeing the artists on stage doing their thing, gives me so much joy. Because I was able to put the artist in a place where they need to be.”
