Independent Spotlight 9/25/13: Jasiri X

Article written by: Nate Sherman

Every rapper wants to be heard, but how many are really worth listening to? From the mainstream to the underground, when I listen to most Hip-Hop music today, I feel like I have to dumb myself down because listening to the lyrics is just painful due to artists sounding illiterate and not having a real message behind their words. Hip-Hop yearns for a voice that has a powerful message and isn’t afraid to be a bit controversial in spreading that message to the masses. Today I want to spotlight steel city native rapper Jasiri X.

What makes Jasiri X stand out from the lot of artists today is that his music, aside from being amazing, is educational and makes you socially aware of people, situations, and our society in general. The reason Jasiri is so out spoken about the government and societal topics in his music is because he is a community activist.

To illustrate how powerful and educational Jasiri is with his lyrics, look no further than his song entitled “Trayvon,” which caught a lot of people’s attention. The song addresses the incident involving the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. If you are someone that has been living under a rock for the past couple of years and do not know about the Trayvon Martin case, Jasiri creatively walks you through the events of the incident that led to the death of Trayvon Martin .

I spent a portion of my day listening to a plethora of Jasiri’s music and he is simply thought provoking in a way that makes you think about real life situations and the things that plague our modern day society. What I enjoy most about Jasiri X’s music is his creativity and the way he uses it to speak his mind. That in itself makes his music powerful and something that even the most simple minded individual can comprehend and relate to.

If you doubt this man’s creativity, please go out of your way to listen to his “Control” response to Kendrick Lamar. You want to know what’s so creative about this response? It is not his response to Kendrick Lamar, but a mock response by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg to Kendrick Lamar’s verse. Confused? I’ll let you think about that for a second.

Earlier this year, Jasiri X released his latest mixtape “Ascension,” which is a fantastic album and a great listen.

There is no question in my mind that Jasiri X has a promising career in Hip-Hop and is someone that is not only worth listening to, but is someone that all should keep an eye on for many years to come.
